Playa del Carmen
This buzzing coastal town is just under an hour outside of Cancun. As you drive down
the highway on the way to the coastal town of Playa del Carmen, you’re surrounded by
mangrove trees and tropical foliage on both sides. While Playa del Carmen is on the
coast, the jungle encroaches on the beach, creating some of the most diverse
ecosystems in the world.
Where to Stay
When you’re in Playa del Carmen, we suggest you stay at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba
luxury resort. Private villas with pools and access to some of the most beautiful beaches
in Mexico await at this gorgeous gem of a hotel on the Gulf Coast of Mexico.
What to Do
Activities and excursions abound in Playa del Carmen, and depending on where you stay, you can experience the stunning beauty of freshwater mangroves or gorgeous coral reefs. If you prefer to actively participate in your vacations, PGA Championship golf course El Camaleon is located right in Playa del Carmen. Enjoy the coastal breeze while you’re playing one of the most gorgeous golf courses in North America.
Or if you really want to spoil yourself, treat yourself to a luxurious spa treatment. This is another reason we like staying at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba: they have an amazing spa where you can enjoy a massage in a serene setting, surrounded by nature and the sound of the waves.
What to Eat
If you come to Mexico, you can’t leave without eating some of the best tacos, right? Check out El Fogon, taco heaven for those that are visiting Playa del Carmen. And if you want to experience one of the most luxurious meals in the area, make reservations at Pavo Real by the Sea where you can dine on the beach in one of the most romantic settings you’ve ever experienced.
Tulum
Just about an hour away from Playa del Carmen is one of the trendiest locations in the Gulf Coast, Tulum. This tropical coastal city has everything you need to experience Mexico to the fullest, including its own set of Mayan Ruins. If you visit the area, you’ll see that it’s segmented into two parts. We prefer Tulum Beach over Tulum Town. Tulum Beach is home to the luxury resorts that we’re going to spotlight.
Where to Stay
If you want an all-inclusive experience, we recommend Grand Oasis Tulum, a luxury hotel with beachfront rooms or ocean view terraces. This is perfect for the traveler that doesn’t want to leave their hotel while they’re on vacation. With excursions leaving daily and access to private beaches, Grand Oasis Tulum is a great choice if you’re staying in Tulum.
If you’re looking to stay at an adult-only resort, Kore Tulum Retreat Spa & Resort has everything you could possibly want. Luxurious rooms, delicious food and handcrafted cocktails and excursions galore.
What to Do
Whether you stay at a hotel, or you decide to do your own thing while you’re down there, make sure you hit the Tulum Ruins and a cenote. Cenotes are freshwater caverns that are scattered throughout the coast of Mexico, creating freshwater pools and tunnels that can be explored. But don’t forget to take some time to just lay on the beach. Tulum has some of the most gorgeous beaches in Mexico.
What to Eat and Drink
Make your reservations early if you want to experience the best restaurant in Tulum, Hartwood. With no menu, Hartwood makes delicious food out of whatever is available from the local ranches and farms. Locally sourced ingredients are the lifeblood of Hartwood. Don’t miss out on this amazing experience if you’re in Tulum.
Drinking mezcal is a right of passage on a trip to the Gulf of Mexico. Check out Gitano. They’re famous for their mezcal bar and the ambiance is top notch. If you’ve never had mezcal, this is the place to try it. Their selection is out of this world. And their menu is delicious, too.
